Painting: Breaking from my Comfort Zone!

Hello everyone! Welcome back to my blog!

This week I decided to create some more art for my dorm room wall. I really wanted to have fun and challenge myself at the same time. I haven't done finger-paint since I was a little kid, so I wanted to incorporate being messy and having fun into my latest creation. However, I almost never come up with my own art designs. I always use references, especially when painting. I prefer to draw and create digitally, because it's easy to erase and fix mistakes. However, with painting, it can be more difficult to change things, and I don't like to go into a project without a plan and idea of the completed look. This time, all I knew going into my project was that I wanted to finger-paint. I had no plans for the end result. I made up the process as I went. If you want to see what my finished painting looks like, keep reading!

Step 1

I gathered all of my materials. I used a canvas, acrylic paints, paper towels, water, and paint pens. I'll admit, it felt kinda weird going into a painting project without any paintbrushes!

Step 2

I started by wetting my fingertips in the water. I was hoping this would help spread the paint around the canvas easier, since I wasn't using paintbrushes. It seemed to work pretty well! I just dipped my fingers in the paint and dragged my fingers across the canvas in random patterns. After having fun adding different colors, I decided to dip my entire hand in my plate of paint, and add some handprints to the canvas. That was fun! After that, when I was cleaning my hand on the paper towels, I realized I could use the paper towel itself to dab the paint around the canvas. Once I was happy with how it looked, I let it dry before continuing to the next step!

Step 3

After the background dried, I used a black paint pen to outline the shape of a flower. Once I was satisfied with the shape, I used a gold paint pen to add some decorative details. Ta-da! That's it! I hung the painting on my wall with a few of my other paintings.

I'm so happy with how this turned out! I do think it helped me become less scared of heading into projects without a plan. I'm still nervous, but I think if I kept trying projects like this I would become even more comfortable.

If I were to do this again, I think I would choose different colors for the background, maybe some color schemes that compliment each other better. I would also change the design! I might make this into a flower series.

I highly recommend finger-painting! It was really freeing to paint so carelessly. Just dip your fingers into the paint and get started! Let me know if you try this, I'd love to hear about your experiences!

Have a fantastic day!
